Generic Drug Quality, Safety, and Efficacy
Hybrid Public Meeting
February 19, 2027
Generic drugs account for about 90% of prescriptions dispensed in the United States and play a vital role in expanding patient access to affordable treatment. Assuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of generic drugs across the drug lifecycle for patients is a shared responsibility of regulators and manufacturers. Purchasers, healthcare professionals, and patients contribute to safeguarding drug quality by reporting suspected issues with marketed drugs and properly storing and handling medicines.
The Foundation, in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will convene a hybrid public meeting to explore the oversight of generic prescription drugs and the perceptions that shape confidence in generic drugs. Discussions will cover how generic drug quality, safety, and efficacy are assured before and after a product reaches the market, and what might be done to strengthen confidence in generic drugs. Discussions will also explore how patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public perceive generic drug quality, safety, and efficacy, and how communication might help improve public understanding.

This meeting was funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, under FDA contract 75F40126C00214.
