Carelon Research, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elevance Health, uses real-world data to conduct outcomes, health economics, pharmacoepidemiologic, and late phase research. The HealthCare Integrated Research Database is a proprietary, fully integrated, longitudinal claims database that combines medical, pharmacy, and laboratory information drawn nearly 80 million unique individuals with medical coverage and nearly 62 million researchable lives with medical and pharmacy claims information since 2006. In addition, The HealthCare Integrated Research Environment has the ability to link the claims data in the HealthCare Integrated Research Database to complementary data sources, including inpatient and outpatient medical records, national vital statistics records, cancer and vaccine registries (state-by-state), disease and device registries, member and provider surveys, and point of care clinical data. Using these resources, Carelon Research, Inc. conducts a range of real world research designed to meet client needs, including retrospective database studies, medical record review studies, cross-sectional and longitudinal patient and provider surveys, and prospective site-based studies, including pragmatic clinical trials.

Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) has been a Sentinel Partner since its inception and has recently joined the IMEDS Network. KPWHRI is the public-interest research arm of Kaiser Permanente Washington, a nonprofit integrated healthcare organization. Research at KPWHRI is led by a faculty of investigators, collaborative scientists, and biostatisticians; the faculty includes individuals with graduate training and experience in medicine, psychology, epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, anthropology, and other relevant disciplines. Nationally recognized for rigorous and innovative methods, researchers typically work in interdisciplinary teams, bringing new perspectives to challenging questions. Most KPWHRI faculty members have secondary appointments at the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, or other academic institutions, contributing to teaching and research there. They also help train tomorrow’s scientific leaders, including postdoctoral fellows and UW students. Kaiser Permanente Washington’s population includes 680,000 researchable lives throughout the Pacific Northwest, primarily within Washington State. As an integrated system, KPWA maintains electronic health record and claims data for its entire population, and these data are available for public health research. In 2017, Kaiser Permanente acquired Group Health Cooperative, and the healthcare system then became Kaiser Permanente Washington. Previously, Group Health had been providing care to members in Washington State since 1947, and as a result electronic health data that go back for decades, including pharmacy data dating back to 1977, are available for research use.
